Tobago prepares  for the  annual goat and crab racing competitions

Port of Spain, Trinidad – March 12, 2013. Ready. Set. GOAT! On the Caribbean island of Tobago, every year as spring rolls around, so does one of the island's most unique, unusual and, to some, seriously competitive sporting competitions: goat racing. A sport that has become all the rage since its inception in 1925, the races will be taking place on April 1-2, 2013 on the island of Tobago. Every year, the village of Buccoo prepares for the exciting sporting event held at the Buccoo Integrated Facility as hundreds come to cheer and watch the races. Those who would like to show their competitive spirit can cheer on their goat and jockey of choice or participate in the crab races that take place at the same time.

While goat racing has become a professional sport, with both jockeys and goats training throughout the year for the opportunity to compete in the grand event, visitors can participate in the annual sister-event that takes place: crab racing. Big, blue and harnessed with a piece of string, the crabs are poked and prodded by their jockeys to run in the desired direction. Best of all, win or lose, most of the crabs end their day with the same fate: becoming a tasty part of the local delicacy, curried crab and dumplings.
